The Friendship Page
I thought the issues raised in the advice forum were pretty accurate when compared to the challenges discussed in the chapter. The forum addressed support, making and keeping friendships, and developing feelings and attraction. Sometimes friendships wane because they have run their course or because of personal and professional commitments. In other words, life happens and when that leaves little time for us to invest in anything else it can deteriorate. The forum also discussed what happens when you develop feelings for your friend. Tensions in the relationship can cause pressures in the friendship that may not be conducive. It seems to me that the idea of friends as a support system is universal. In some cultures, the norms and purpose of friendships may be different, but I think we all look to our friends for support in one way or another. For some it may be advice, venting, or shared interest, but friends add an aspect to our lives that is enriching. It was definitely interesting to read about the ideas and problems of friendships from a different cultural perspective.
